Hedda Gabbler

Why did Ibsen choose to title his play HEDDA GABBLER instead of HEDDA TESMAN? The name gabler has to be her maiden name. y not tessman? I read somewhere that he did this bcuz he wanted to show that hedda was her fathers daughter not her husbands wife. This makes perfect sense but i wana kno what you guys think? What other possiblities are there?

I thought about that too when I first read the play. Like why name it Hedda Gabler when thats no longer her name? However as I read more and more I thought about what it meant for her to be Hedda Gabler. I think Ibsen was implying that although she was married she wasn't going to change her ways. You said that she was her father's daughter-- meaning she still acted as if superior to others, she played with the pistols and she expected the same things she had when she was just Gabler. Even though she is married to Tesman, Lovburg and Thea called her Gabler at one point showing how she hasn't changed in all the years. And if we refer back to class when we talked about power and control we could assume that Ibsen names the play Hedda Gabler because he wants us to remember that there is a change in the play throughout all the characters except hedda seems to remain set in stone in her values, etc.
